Talking sustainability Print

Sustainability will not be achieved through wishful thinking. Sustainable development depends on real commitments and actions, by real people in a real world.

This is what Vinyl 2010 is all about.

In line with the 2002 Johannesburg declaration, which states that the private sector ‘has a duty to contribute' to the drive toward sustainability, together as Vinyl 2010, the European PVC production and converting chain has been working hard to ensure that the challenge of sustainable development is taken to heart. This is why the PVC industry, which represents 21,000 businesses, is putting into practice an integrated approach to deliver responsible, full-cycle product stewardship.

Today, the road to sustainable development cannot have borders or frontiers. The evolution of the PVC industry and its sustainable development over the next decades, will be similar everywhere, with the same opportunities and the same challenges. Globalisation imposes a different way of thinking. Markets are global, issues are global, positive solutions and good practice can be exported to every point on the planet. For these reasons, the partnership between Vinyl 2010 and the other PVC regional associations, from North to South America, from Australia to the Asia-Pacific region, is ever more intensive and integrated.

Vinyl 2010 is committed to dialogue on sustainable development. An ongoing dialogue is an important component for Vinyl 2010 if it is to represent the interests of its stakeholders both inside and outside the industry. A frank exchange of views on studies, experiences and best practices gives added value to improving the effectiveness of the initiatives taken through voluntary commitment and to drive the PVC industry towards sustainability. For this reason Vinyl 2010 assigns great importance to the relationships with the scientific and academic community, authorities, and the rest of the industry, and actively participates at the main events on sustainability in Europe.

Sustainable development also requires openness and good governance. Openness is a fundamental commitment of Vinyl 2010. We publish full details in our annual Progress Reports, discuss frankly and in detail, our successes and failures with our independent Monitoring Committee and attend major international events dedicated to sustainable development to exchange experiences and share best practices.

Openness, however, is often a challenge in terms of how to present data on our progress. Vinyl 2010 covers a very large area and is sometimes complicated to explain and/or understand. For this reason, we encourage stakeholders,  whoever they are, to make contact directly with us.
