Brussels, 27 May 2010 – Following the enormous success of the 2009 Essay Competition, Vinyl 2010 has launched the Sustainable Thinking Platform, a new online forum to discuss and learn about sustainability issues. The platform will host a multimedia competition seeking the best essays, pictures and videos to contribute to the debate we initiated last year.

Young people from all around the world are invited to discuss how the use of natural resources could be made compatible with the needs of today’s consumers and industrial societies.

Participants will be asked to address the following question:
Faced with increasing resource scarcity, how can young people contribute to the promotion of sustainable production and consumption?

In 2010 there will be two editions of this multimedia competition, the first of which runs from 1 April to 31 July. The second round will be launched in August and the topic will be announced closer to the date.

There are over 2,000 Euros in prizes for the various categories, including laptops, cameras and camcorders.  Those who spread the word about the platform will also have the opportunity to win a prize just for promoting the platform amongst the people they know.

In a departure from the 2009 Essay Competition, submissions will be initially rated in a first round by the online platform members. Finalists will then be judged by a panel comprised of international journalists and industry representatives.

The Sustainable Thinking Platform has been presented at the CSD-18 of the UN in New York last 5 May, where it was very positively received.

Close to a 1,000 people from 89 different countries signed up to take part in the 2008-2009 Essay Competition.  Over 200 completed essays were finally submitted to the panel of judges. “The PVC industry is committed to engaging in this wider debate with the world’s future generations. We hope the Sustainable Thinking Platform will reach an even greater number of people linked by their interest and dedication towards sustainable development,” explained Chris Welton, Vinyl 2010 Communications Manager.
