The Judging Panel of the Vinyl 2010 Essay Competition led by Belgian sustainable development expert Nadine Gouzée was extremely impressed by the quality and creativity of the entries received.  The essay question ‘Are sustainable development and economic growth mutually exclusive?' led 35 young people aged 18-30 from across the European Union to send in their 1,000 word essays.

The first prize goes to Maja Dercar (25) from Slovenia, second prize to Daniela Jungova (21) of the Czech Republic and third prize to Francesco Falcone (21), an Italian resident of Brussels.  They will receive prize money of 3,000 euro, 2,000 euro and 1,000 euro respectively, as well as publication in the prestigious environment policy journal ENDS Europe Report.  All 35 entries will be published separately by Vinyl 2010 and are also available online.

Vinyl 2010 General Manager Jean-Pierre De Grève said "We have received some extremely interesting views on sustainability and the future of our planet, which will help us to make progress. The European PVC industry is delighted to provide a platform for young people through this competition,"

The Essay Competition was organised with the help of a number of sustainable development partners, from academic institutions to NGOs.  The Competition will be run again in 2008. Click here to read the winning essays.
